Building Strong Teeth…Keeping those Tiny Teeth Healthy #2

February 12, 2018

While we understand that a hot topic in our current society is community water fluoridation, Dr. Coffman explains below the benefit of fluoride usage in strengthening our kids teeth.

A little background on community water fluoridation from the American Dental Association.  According to the ADA, before water fluoridation, children experienced 3 times the number of cavities as being reported today.  The CDC has since proclaimed community water fluoridation one of the 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century because of the significant decrease in childhood tooth decay.

Lets talk fluoride benefits!  When think of strengthening our bones we think about increasing our intake of calcium.  We do this all the time with our kids by offering them milk with meals, more yogurt or even by giving them their multi-vitamins with calcium.  These are all normal day to day actions we take as parents to strengthen our kids bones.  Now, we need to start thinking about strengthening their teeth at the same time.

This is where fluoride comes into play.  Fluoride works to harden the tooth enamel therefore strengthening the tooth structure which will then resist cavities.  Kids who are within the Wasilla or Palmer City limits are exposed to fluoride through the water.  This provides their teeth with lots of strength building moments throughout the day simply by drinking water.  Now, in the Mat-Su most of us, myself included have a well and our kids are not receiving their fluoride via community water fluoridation.

Dr. Coffman says in order to strengthen teeth on your own there are several things you can be doing to work on that enamel!  First of all, brushing their teeth twice a day for two minutes with a toothpaste that has fluoride and those 6 and older should add a mouth rinse with fluoride to their routine.  Lastly, twice a year during kids check-ups and cleanings they should have professional application of fluoride which our dental hygienists will be happy to explain that process during your next visit!

The fact is that raising kids is hard and working to give our kids healthy habits across the board is something all parents strive to do.  At Wasilla Dental Center we are here to help you reach these goals by providing education and working with you to keep those tiny teeth healthy.
