Let’s talk sealants! We all have our every day dental routines and have worked to create these healthy habits with our kids. We teach them that brushing and flossing is the best way to keep their teeth healthy and to prevent cavities; however, it’s not that easy to clean every single part of our teeth. That is where sealants come into play and Dr. Coffman is here to explain the process, purpose and importance of sealants.
What do sealants do? Sealants fill in all the little nooks and crannies of our teeth that a toothbrush cannot successfully reach and clean. They work to keep our teeth clean by keeping out food particles and other bacterias that can cause cavities.
Why would someone get sealants? Dr. Coffman recommends that kids get sealants on their permeant teeth as soon as they are fully grown in. Sealants are a preventative measure to protect teeth from future cavities. It is impossible to fully clean every grove, and surface of the tooth and no matter how good the dental hygiene and diet is of a patient, spots can still be missed. For these reasons sealants are a great way to protect and keep their teeth healthy!
How are sealants applied? Having sealants applied is an extremely simple process that can be done during your hygiene appointment with time permitting, or during a follow-up visit. When it is time either the Dr. or your hygienist will start by cleaning your teeth, then they will prime your teeth using a little brush, after that the sealants are bonded by the use of a “blue light”. The whole process can take as little as a few minutes per tooth, but the protection of this process is one that will last for many, many years.
The Dr.’s as well as our hygiene staff at Wasilla Dental Center understand and believe in the importance of sealants. If you have any questions about the process or are curious about getting your child in to talk about sealants please call us today!
The fact is that raising kids is hard and working to give our kids healthy habits across the board is something all parents strive to do. At Wasilla Dental Center we are here to help you reach these goals by providing education and working with you to keep those tiny teeth healthy.
